Serving the city of Genoa the present airport is locally known as the Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport, the aviation hub is run by Aeroporto di Genova S.p.A. with the technical support of Aeroporti die Roma. To meet the growing demand in terms of increasing passenger numbers and more freight transport passing through the airport, an extensive development program has been undertaken. It is envisaged that the whole airport will have been expanded and modernised by 2015 and infrastructure will have been relocated along the following layout:

- Eastern Area: this will house the cargo terminal, support offices, fuelling area and the maintenance hangars;

- Western Area: this will be the new home of ENAV technical facilities, have multi-purpose hangars for general aviation use and will have an operating area

- Central Area: this will house the passenger terminal, airlines, governmental authorities, car parks and operating company offices

- Northern Area: this will be home to more governmental authority offices and the carrier operations base.

In the arrivals area of the terminal passengers will find a large number of well-known car hire companies like Avis, Maggiore, Hertz, Europcar, Auto Europa, E-Sixt, Easycar Italia and Travelcar among others.
