Genova Airport is situated just a short 7 km drive from the city centre. Italy’s Liguria region has a well-designed transport system and passengers arriving at the airport or wishing to depart from the airport will find the airport shuttle bus services very cost effective and convenient. The two principle bus services have stops just outside the arrivals area of the terminal building. A Rapid Bus connection is also available between the airport and the main railway stations. The buses are modern, comfortable and have plenty of room for passengers’ luggage.
Buses from Genoa Airport are operated by VOLABUS (ATM), a shuttle service which connects the airport and Brignole and Principe train stations in central Genoa. These are the two main trans stations in the city. The bus ride takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes and the service is available 7 days a week. Tickets for the VOLABUS can be purchased from the driver or be bought at the automated ticket machines in the terminal building at the airport and at a variety of city centre locations including the railway stations.
The VOLABUS makes stops at the airport, at Via Cornigliano/Stazione FS, at Via Pacinotti/Fiumara, then at Piazza Acquaverda (the Principe FS train station), at De Ferrari/Centro Città and finally at the train station Brignole FS. These are only drop off points and passengers are not permitted to join the bus at these stops.
The VOLABUS service starts at 6am and finishes at midnight. The fare costs €6, but this includes a 60 minute journey time on the entire ATM public transport network, using buses, the metro trains and funicular railways.
Returning Genova Airport buses start at Brignole train station at 5.20am and the last service leaves at 11.20 pm, using the same stops as above in the reverse order, but this time only allowing passengers to get on the bus.
A brand new shuttle service I24 operates between the terminal and the Sistri Ponente district of Genoa, takes passengers to the railway station in that district and to the new Marina Genoa Airport, running ca. every 30 minutes. The first service of the day leaves the airport at 6.15am and the services finishes the day at 7.13 pm. From the new Marina Airport the I24 bus service leaves at 6.35am as the first service of the day and the service finishes at 7.40pm. the journey time in each case is between 30 and 40 minutes.
Buses from Genova Airport also cater for air passengers who have booked onward travel by train to destinations within the Liguria region or other parts of Italy. The Rapid Bus connects the airport with the Principe and Brignole train stations, from where passengers can join Italy’s vast rail network. The Rapid Bus operates a service once per hour.
With the city centre there are some wonderful attractions for single travellers and families with children alike. The city’s aquarium displays many sea creatures like dolphins, penguins, jellyfish, seals and turtles. Feeding times are particularly popular, when sometimes shy creatures come out of their hiding places and can be observed munching their lunch.
The Biosfera (Biosphere) is a family attraction along similar lines, but here visitors can enjoy seeing exotic birds and butterflies flitting through a gigantic greenhouse full of tropical plants. Both attractions can be reached by public transport.
